Indulge in a slice of Vlaai, a traditional Dutch fruit pie with a buttery crust and a sweet cherry or apple filling. Perfect for a cozy afternoon tea or as a delightful dessert at your next gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 125 g unsalted butter
- 100 g granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp milk
- 500 g fruit filling (e.g., cherry or apple)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- 2
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, and granulated sugar. Mix until crumbly.
- 3
Add the egg and milk to the bowl and mix until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
- 4
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to fit your pie dish. Place the rolled dough in the pie dish and trim any excess.
- 5
In a separate bowl, mix the fruit filling with cornstarch and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the prepared crust.
- 6
Optional: Roll out leftover dough to create a lattice top for the Vlaai, or leave it open-faced.
- 7
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- 8
Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your Vlaai with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
