Indulge in the warm, fluffy goodness of Vetkoek, a traditional South African fried bread. Perfect for a cozy weekend brunch or as a delightful snack, enjoy it stuffed with savory mince or sweet jam.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • optional mince or jam

Method

  1. 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sifted flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. 2

In a separate bowl, mix the warm water and sugar until dissolved.

  3. 3

Gradually add the water mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.

  4. 4

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.

  5. 5

Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  6. 6

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat.

  7. 7

Shape the rested dough into small balls and gently place them in the hot oil.

  8. 8

Fry the vetkoek for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown on all sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.
