Experience the heart of Czech cuisine with Vepřo-Knedlo-Zelo, a hearty dish of tender pork shoulder, tangy sauerkraut, and fluffy bread dumplings. Perfect for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg pork shoulder
  • 200 ml water
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp ground pepper
  • 500 g sauerkraut
  • 4 pieces bread dumplings
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion medium onion

Method

    Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

    Season the pork shoulder with salt and pepper, then sear it in a hot skillet with butter until browned on all sides.

    Transfer the seared pork to a roasting dish, add the water, and cover with foil. Bake in the oven for about 1.5 hours until tender.

    In the meantime, sauté the chopped onion in butter until translucent, then add the rinsed sauerkraut. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    Prepare the bread dumplings according to package instructions or make them from scratch, then keep warm.

    Once the pork is done, let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with the sauerkraut and bread dumplings.
