Indulge in the sweet, comforting flavors of Torrijas, a Spanish twist on French toast made with stale bread soaked in milk and spices. Perfect for a cozy brunch or a special dessert to share with loved ones.
IngredientsWhat you need
- -17 °C stale bread (preferably French or brioche)
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method
- 1
In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves but do not boil.
- 2
Place the slices of stale bread in a shallow dish and pour the warm milk mixture over them, allowing the bread to soak for about 5 minutes per side.
- 3
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until well combined.
- 4
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, remove the soaked bread from the milk, allowing excess to drip off, then dip each slice in the beaten eggs.
- 5
Fry the bread slices in the hot oil for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 6
While still warm, sprinkle the torrijas with sugar and cinnamon to taste.
- 7
Serve warm or at room temperature. They can be enjoyed plain or with honey or syrup drizzled on top.
