Savor the rich flavors of this hearty Surfleisch, a traditional Belgian dish featuring tender pork shoulder simmered with garlic, onions, and aromatic spices. Ideal for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 800 grams pork shoulder
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 cup white wine
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
- 2 medium onions
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 160°C (320°F).
- 2
In a large bowl, rub the pork shoulder pieces with salt, black pepper, and minced garlic to season them thoroughly.
- 3
In a large Dutch oven or oven-safe pot, heat a little oil over medium-high heat and sear the pork pieces on all sides until browned.
- 4
Remove the pork from the pot and set it aside. In the same pot, sauté the sliced onions until translucent.
- 5
Return the pork to the pot, add white wine, beef broth, and caraway seeds (if using). Bring to a simmer.
- 6
Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven. Cook for about 90 minutes or until the pork is tender.
- 7
Once cooked, remove the pot from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
- 8
Serve the Surfleisch with bread or dumplings to soak up the delicious sauce.
