Savor the warmth of Turkish street food with these golden, sesame-crusted simit. Perfect for breakfast or a delightful snack, they pair beautifully with tea or yogurt for a cozy afternoon treat.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 10 g instant yeast
- 250 ml warm water
- 25 g sugar
- 10 g salt
- 50 g sesame seeds
- 50 ml molasses
- 50 ml water
Method
- 1
In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture.
- 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Then cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 4
Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F). Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and form a circle, pinching the ends to seal.
- 5
Mix the molasses with 50 ml of water in a shallow dish. Dip each circle into the molasses mixture, then coat with sesame seeds.
- 6
Place the coated simits on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- 7
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
