- 500 grams Hilsa fish (Ilish)
- 3 tablespoons mustard seeds
- 2 green chilies green chilies
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 4 tablespoons mustard oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water

Soak the mustard seeds in water for at least 30 minutes. After soaking, drain the water and blend the mustard seeds with green chilies and a little salt to form a smooth paste.

In a bowl, marinate the Hilsa fish pieces with the mustard paste, turmeric powder, and salt. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.

Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts to smoke slightly. Reduce the heat to medium.

Place the marinated fish pieces in the pan carefully. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side or until the fish is cooked through and tender.

Add about 1 cup of water to the pan, cover it with a lid, and let it steam for an additional 5 minutes to enhance the flavors.

Once done, remove the lid and let it simmer for a couple of minutes without the lid to allow excess water to evaporate.
