Indulge in the soft, slightly sweet layers of Shirmal, a traditional South Asian bread infused with ghee and a hint of sweetness. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or as a delightful accompaniment to your favorite curry.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons ghee or melted butter
Method
- 1
In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and egg.
- 3
Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 5
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions.
- 6
Roll out each portion into a round shape and place them on a baking sheet. Brush the tops with ghee or melted butter.
- 7
Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
- 8
Serve warm, often enjoyed with stews or soups.
