Indulge in these warm, buttery scones studded with sweet raisins and a hint of vanilla. Perfect for a cozy brunch or a delightful afternoon tea, they bring a touch of comfort to any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 egg beaten egg

Method

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and sugar until well combined.

  3. 3

Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

Stir in the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and raisins (if using) until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a round about 1-inch thick.

  6. 6

Cut the dough into 8 wedges and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

  8. 8

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm with butter or jam.
