Savor the heartwarming flavors of German Rouladen, where tender beef flank steak is lovingly wrapped around smoky bacon and onions, simmered in rich beef broth. Ideal for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 slices beef flank steak
- 4 slices bacon
- 1 medium onion
- 2 tablespoons mustard
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon oil
- to taste salt and pepper
- 4 pieces carrots
Method
- 1
Lay the beef slices flat and spread mustard evenly on each slice.
- 2
Sprinkle salt and pepper on the mustard, then layer with chopped bacon, onions, and carrots.
- 3
Tightly roll up each slice of beef, starting from one end, and secure with toothpicks or kitchen twine.
- 4
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the rouladen on all sides until browned.
- 5
Once browned, remove from the skillet and place in a pot. Add the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
- 6
Cover and cook on low heat for about 90 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
- 7
Remove the rouladen and let rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
- 8
Serve with the braising liquid spooned over the top and enjoy with potatoes or bread.
