Experience the rich, aromatic flavors of Indonesian Rendang, a slow-cooked beef dish infused with coconut milk and fragrant spices. Ideal for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering with friends.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef (chuck or brisket)
  • 400 ml coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 3 tablespoons rendang spice paste
  • 3 leaves kaffir lime leaves
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Method

  1. 1

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the rendang spice paste and sauté for about 5 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 3

Add the beef cubes to the pot and brown them on all sides.

  4. 4

Pour in the coconut milk, tamarind paste, kaffir lime leaves, cinnamon sticks, and salt.

  5. 5

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the sauce thickens.

  6. 6

Taste and adjust salt if necessary. Cook until the oil separates from the sauce.

  7. 7

Serve hot with steamed rice or traditional Indonesian rice cakes.
