Savor the crispy delight of Patacones, twice-fried green plantains seasoned with salt and served with zesty lime wedges. This vibrant Latin American snack is perfect for sharing at your next gathering or as a fun weeknight treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 large green plantains
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 lime lime wedges

Method

  1. 1

Peel the green plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.

  2. 2

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until hot.

  3. 3

Fry the plantain slices for about 3-4 minutes, or until they turn golden and tender.

  4. 4

Remove the fried plantains from the oil and let them cool slightly. Then, use the bottom of a flat surface to smash each piece to about half an inch thick.

  5. 5

Return the smashed plantains to the hot oil and fry again for another 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden.

  6. 6

Remove the patacones from the oil and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt while hot.

  7. 7

Serve warm with lime wedges and your choice of dipping sauce.
