Savor the warmth of Indian cuisine with this comforting Musoor Dal, a vibrant dish of red lentils simmered with aromatic spices and fresh cilantro. Ideal for a cozy weeknight dinner or a nourishing lunch.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup Musoor dal (red lentils)
- 3 cups water
- 1 medium onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 inch ginger
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt to taste salt
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro
Method
- 1
Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- 2
Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- 3
Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- 4
Add the washed Musoor dal, turmeric powder, and salt to the pot. Stir well to combine.
- 5
Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the lentils are soft.
- 6
Check the consistency of the dal. If it's too thick, add more water to achieve the desired thickness.
- 7
Taste and adjust salt if necessary. Remove from heat.
- 8
Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving. Serve hot with rice or bread.
