Indulge in the warm, nutty sweetness of Moong Dal Halwa, a traditional Indian dessert made with split yellow gram, ghee, and aromatic cardamom. Perfect for festive occasions or a comforting treat after dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup moong dal (split yellow gram)
  • 1/2 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds, cashews)
  • 1 tablespoon raisins

Method

  1. 1

Drain the soaked moong dal and blend it into a coarse paste using minimal water.

  2. 2

In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat the ghee over medium heat.

  3. 3

Add the coarse moong dal paste to the pan and sauté for about 5-7 minutes, until it turns golden brown and fragrant.

  4. 4

Pour in the milk and water, and stir well to combine. Bring to a boil.

  5. 5

Add sugar, cardamom powder, and mix well. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring continuously until the halwa thickens.

  6. 6

Once thickened, add the chopped nuts and raisins. Mix until well distributed.

  7. 7

Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.

  8. 8

Serve warm, garnished with additional nuts if desired.

I loved how rich and creamy the texture of the Moong Dal Halwa turned out.
