Experience the chewy delight of Montreal-Style Bagels, perfectly boiled and baked to golden perfection. With a hint of sweetness from honey and a sprinkle of poppy and sesame seeds, these bagels are ideal for a cozy brunch or a delightful snack any time of day.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1/4 cup poppy seeds
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
Method
- 1
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and honey.
- 3
Mix until a dough forms, then knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 5
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of honey.
- 6
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and form a circle, pinching the ends together.
- 7
Boil bagels in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side, then drain and place them on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds.
- 8
Bake bagels for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
