Mkate, a delightful East African flatbread, is perfect for sharing at family gatherings or casual dinners. With its soft texture and subtle flavor, it pairs beautifully with stews or can be enjoyed on its own.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Method

  1. 1

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

  2. 2

Gradually add water to the dry ingredients while mixing until a dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 2 minutes until smooth.

  4. 4

Divide the dough into four equal portions and flatten each portion into a disk about 1/2 inch thick.

  5. 5

Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook each disk for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

  6. 6

Remove from heat and let them cool slightly before serving.

  7. 7

Serve warm with your favorite dip or stew.
