Indulge in the creamy sweetness of Melktert, a traditional South African milk tart with a buttery crust and a hint of vanilla. Perfect for a cozy dessert after dinner or a delightful treat at afternoon tea.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 4 cups milk
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- 2
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, and 1/4 cup of sugar. Mix until crumbly.
- 3
Press the mixture into the bottom and sides of a tart pan to form the crust. Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
- 4
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, remaining sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Stir until thick and bubbly.
- 5
Remove from heat and add the beaten eggs and vanilla extract. Mix well until combined.
- 6
Pour the milk mixture into the baked crust and smooth the top. Bake for an additional 25-30 minutes until set.
- 7
Let the melktert cool completely before serving. Optionally, sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.
