Savor the warmth of traditional Swedish Limpa bread, infused with the rich flavors of molasses and caraway seeds. This hearty loaf is perfect for cozy weeknight dinners or as a delightful addition to your holiday table.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 3 cups rye flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
Method
- 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- 2
Add molasses, salt, and caraway seeds (if using) to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- 3
Gradually add the rye flour and all-purpose flour, mixing until a sticky dough forms.
- 4
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 6
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
- 7
Let the loaf rise for an additional 30 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- 8
Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
