Experience the warm, inviting flavors of Kleicha, a traditional Iraqi date-filled pastry. Perfect for sharing at gatherings or enjoying with tea on a cozy afternoon, this treat brings a taste of home to any occasion.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup dates
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
Method
- 1
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and vegetable oil. Mix well until crumbly.
- 2
Gradually add warm water to the flour mixture, kneading until a smooth dough forms. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- 3
In a separate bowl, mix the chopped dates, cinnamon, and sugar to create the filling.
- 4
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Roll out the rested dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- 5
Cut the rolled dough into circles using a round cutter. Place a small spoonful of the date filling onto the center of each circle.
- 6
Fold the dough over the filling to create half-moon shapes and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
- 7
Place the Kleicha on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- 8
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
