Indulge in the sweet, nutty flavors of Kashata, a delightful East African treat made with grated coconut and ground peanuts. Perfect for sharing at festive gatherings or enjoying as a cozy afternoon snack.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 cups grated coconut
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup ground peanuts
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
Method
- 1
In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring continuously.
- 2
Once the sugar syrup reaches a light boil, add the grated coconut and ground peanuts to the mixture.
- 3
Stir in the salt, vanilla extract, and cardamom powder. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.
- 4
Continue to cook the mixture on low heat, stirring frequently, for about 10-15 minutes, until it thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan.
- 5
Grease a flat surface or a baking dish with a little oil. Pour the mixture onto the greased surface and spread it evenly using a spatula.
- 6
Let it cool for about 10-15 minutes. Once slightly firm, cut it into squares or rectangles.
- 7
Allow the Kashata to cool completely before serving. Enjoy this delightful Tanzanian treat!
