Experience the rich flavors of Bengali cuisine with Ilish Bhapa, a steamed Hilsa fish delicately marinated in mustard and spices. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner, this dish brings warmth and tradition to your table.

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Ilish fish (Hilsa)
  • 1 cup mustard paste
  • 2 tablespoons green chili
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon mustard oil
  • 1 cup water

Method

  1. 1

First, marinate the Ilish fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

In a bowl, mix the mustard paste, slit green chilies, and a bit of salt. This will be the marinade for the fish.

  3. 3

Coat the marinated fish pieces thoroughly with the mustard mixture.

  4. 4

Place the coated fish pieces in a steaming dish or a banana leaf, and drizzle with mustard oil.

  5. 5

In a pot, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Place the steaming dish on top, cover it, and steam for about 25 minutes on medium heat.

  6. 6

Once cooked, carefully remove from the pot and serve hot with steamed rice.
