Savor the heartwarming flavors of Holubtsi, a traditional Eastern European dish of tender cabbage rolls stuffed with seasoned ground beef and rice, simmered in rich tomato sauce. Ideal for cozy family dinners or special gatherings.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 500 grams ground beef
- 1 cup rice
- 1 medium onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 400 grams tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Method
- 1
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage core and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 5-7 minutes until the leaves are soft. Remove and let cool.
- 2
In a bowl, mix the ground beef, uncooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- 3
Once the cabbage is cool enough to handle, gently peel off the leaves. Cut the thick vein from the base of each leaf to make them easier to roll.
- 4
Take a leaf and place a generous spoonful of the meat mixture at the base. Roll the leaf over the filling, tucking in the sides to secure it. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
- 5
In a large baking dish, spread a layer of tomato sauce at the bottom. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, then cover with the remaining tomato sauce.
- 6
Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 60-75 minutes until the meat and rice are cooked through.
- 7
Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
