Experience the heartwarming flavors of Eastern Europe with Golubtsy, tender cabbage rolls stuffed with savory ground beef and rice, simmered in rich tomato sauce. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or family gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 500 grams ground beef
- 1 cup rice
- 1 large onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 400 grams tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Method
- 1
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and blanch the leaves for about 2-3 minutes until they are pliable. Remove and set aside to cool.
- 2
In a medium pot, cook the rice according to package instructions until tender. Drain and let cool.
- 3
In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- 4
Take a cabbage leaf and place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture at the base of the leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
- 5
In a large pot or baking dish, spread some tomato sauce on the bottom. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls in a single layer, seam side down, then cover with the remaining tomato sauce.
- 6
Cover the pot with a lid or aluminum foil and simmer on low heat for about 1.5 hours or bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for the same duration.
- 7
Once cooked, let the golubtsy rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy with additional tomato sauce if desired.
