Indulge in the sweet, tropical flavors of Goiabada, a Brazilian guava paste that transforms simple ingredients into a luscious treat. Perfect for spreading on toast or pairing with cheese at your next gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 kg guavas
- 1 kg sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Method
- 1
Wash the guavas thoroughly and cut them in half, removing any seeds.
- 2
In a large saucepan, combine the guavas and water. Cook over medium heat until the guavas soften, about 30 minutes.
- 3
Once softened, use a blender or food processor to puree the guavas until smooth.
- 4
Return the guava puree to the saucepan and add the sugar and lemon juice. Stir well to combine.
- 5
Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- 6
To check if it's ready, place a small amount on a plate and let it cool; if it holds its shape, it's done.
- 7
Pour the thickened Goiabada into a greased mold or dish and let it cool completely at room temperature.
- 8
Once cooled, slice into pieces and serve. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
