Warm up your winter evenings with a cozy cup of Glögg, a traditional Scandinavian spiced mulled wine infused with cinnamon, cloves, and orange zest. Perfect for holiday gatherings or a comforting night in.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1 cup vodka
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 5 whole cardamom pods
  • 1 orange zest
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup raisins

Method

  1. 1

In a large pot, combine the red wine, vodka (if using), and sugar over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom pods, and orange zest to the pot.

  3. 3

Stir gently until the sugar has dissolved completely.

  4. 4

Heat the mixture to just below boiling, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Do not let it boil.

  5. 5

Remove from heat and let the glögg steep for another 10 minutes to enhance the flavors.

  6. 6

Strain the glögg through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices.

  7. 7

Serve hot in mugs, garnished with sliced almonds and raisins if desired.

  8. 8

Enjoy your warm Glögg during the chilly winter season, preferably with gingerbread cookies!
