Experience the rich flavors of Portugal with Ginjinha, a sweet cherry liqueur infused with aromatic spices. Ideal for sipping after dinner or serving at festive gatherings, this delightful drink will warm your heart and elevate any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle ginja berries (sour cherries)
  • 750 ml good quality aguardente (or brandy)
  • 300 g granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick cinnamon stick
  • 5 cloves whole cloves
  • 1 lemon peel lemon peel

Method

  1. 1

In a clean glass jar, combine the ginja berries and sugar. Stir gently to mix.

  2. 2

Pour in the aguardente (or brandy) over the berries and sugar mixture, ensuring all the sugar is dissolved.

  3. 3

Add the cinnamon stick, whole cloves, and lemon peel to the jar for additional flavor.

  4. 4

Seal the jar tightly and shake gently to combine all ingredients.

  5. 5

Store the jar in a cool, dark place for at least 2 to 3 weeks to allow the flavors to infuse.

  6. 6

After the infusion period, strain the liquid through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into clean bottles.

  7. 7

Serve Ginjinha chilled or at room temperature, often with a piece of the ginja berry in the glass.

I loved how the sweet and tart flavors of the ginja berries complemented the aguardente.
