Indulge in these crispy fried pies filled with savory beef mince, tender potatoes, and a hint of sweetness from chutney. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a delightful snack at gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1500 ml Snowflake white bread flour or cake flour
  • 5 ml baking powder
  • 7 ml salt
  • 250 g margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 250 ml milk to mix
  • 60 ml oil
  • 500 g lean beef mince
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, skinned and chopped
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 10 ml sugar
  • 100 ml chutney

Method

  1. 1

    Rub margarine into dry ingredients.

  2. 2

Beat the eggs. Add to the dry ingredients with a little milk to mix into a soft pliable dough. Take care not to add too much milk which will result in a sticky dough.

  3. 3

Roll out and cut into circles using a saucer.

  4. 4

Spoon the filling in the centre of the circle. Fold over and seal with milk.

  5. 5

    Press edges with a fork.

  6. 6

Fry in hot oil on both sides.

  7. 7

Heat oil in a large frying pan.

  8. 8

Brown the mince. Remove and set aside.

  9. 9

Brown the onions. Return meat to pan.

  10. 10

Add the skinned tomatoes, diced potatoes, sugar and chutney. Simmer until potatoes are tender.

  11. 11

Season to taste. A little curry can also be added.
