Indulge in the flaky layers of Feteer Meshaltet, an Egyptian pastry that harmonizes buttery goodness with a hint of sweetness. Perfect for a cozy brunch or a delightful dessert after dinner.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 cup additional melted butter
Method
- 1
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
- 2
Activate the yeast by dissolving it in warm water and letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- 3
Add the yeast mixture and milk to the flour mixture. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
- 4
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 5
Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle, brushing each layer with melted butter.
- 6
Layer the rolled dough circles on top of each other in a buttered baking dish, creating a stack.
- 7
Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for about 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- 8
Remove from the oven, brush with additional melted butter, and serve warm.
