Indulge in the rich flavors of Esterhazy Torte, a classic Hungarian dessert that layers ground almonds and velvety buttercream, topped with sweet marzipan. Perfect for a special occasion or an elegant afternoon treat with coffee.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 200 g ground almonds
- 150 g powdered sugar
- 3 large egg whites
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 200 g butter
- 200 g marzipan
- 100 g powdered sugar
- 200 g heavy cream
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the ground almonds, powdered sugar, and egg whites until well combined.
- 3
Spread the almond mixture onto the prepared baking sheet in a smooth layer and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 4
While the base is baking, prepare the buttercream by creaming the softened butter with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until light and fluffy.
- 5
Once the almond layer has cooled, cut it into two equal parts. Spread the buttercream filling on one layer, and place the other layer on top.
- 6
Roll out the marzipan and cover the top of the torte with it, smoothing it out carefully.
- 7
Chill the torte in the fridge for about 1 hour before serving, to allow the flavors to meld.
- 8
Slice and serve your Esterhazy Torte with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
