Experience the vibrant flavors of Bengali cuisine with Doi Ilish, a luscious dish of Hilsa fish simmered in creamy yogurt and mustard oil. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a special family gathering.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ilish fish (Hilsa)
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Method

  1. 1

Marinate the Ilish fish pieces with turmeric and salt. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

  2. 2

Heat mustard oil in a pan over medium heat until hot.

  3. 3

Carefully add the marinated fish pieces to the hot oil and fry lightly until they turn golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes.

  4. 4

Reduce the heat and add the yogurt to the pan, mixing gently to coat the fish in the yogurt sauce.

  5. 5

Cook for another 5-10 minutes on low heat until the fish is cooked through and the sauce thickens slightly.

  6. 6

Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

  7. 7

    Serve hot with steamed rice.
