Indulge in the warm, fluffy delight of Dampfnudeln, a traditional German steamed bun infused with sweet vanilla and buttery goodness. Perfect for a cozy weekend brunch or a comforting dessert treat.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 250 ml milk
- 50 g butter
- 1 packet dry yeast
- 50 g sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 200 ml water
Method
- 1
In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, yeast mixture, and vanilla extract.
- 3
Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 5
Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into small balls (about 6-8 pieces).
- 6
In a large pot, add water and bring to a simmer. Place a steamer basket over the pot, and arrange the dough balls inside, leaving space between them.
- 7
Cover and steam the dumplings for about 20-25 minutes until they are puffed and cooked through.
- 8
Serve warm, optionally with a sauce like vanilla sauce or fruit compote.
