Experience the heartwarming flavors of Indian cuisine with this comforting Dal Tadka, featuring creamy yellow lentils, aromatic spices, and fresh coriander. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a delightful weekend feast.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 3 cups water
- 1 medium onion
- 1 medium tomato
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves
Method
- 1
In a pot, bring the water to a boil and add the rinsed toor dal. Cook until the dal is soft and mushy, about 20-25 minutes. You can also use a pressure cooker for quicker cooking.
- 2
In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- 3
Add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- 4
Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
- 5
Add the chopped tomatoes and salt, and cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
- 6
Once the dal is cooked, add it to the tempering mixture. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Adjust the water for desired consistency.
- 7
Sprinkle garam masala and mix well. Remove from heat.
- 8
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
