Warm your heart with this traditional Jewish cholent, a hearty stew of tender beef brisket, rich barley, and savory beans. Perfect for Shabbat dinner or a cozy family gathering, it’s a dish that brings everyone together.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried beans (such as pinto or kidney)
  • 1 cup barley
  • 2 cups water or beef broth
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 907.2 g beef brisket or bone-in beef short ribs
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Method

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C).

  2. 2

In a large pot, combine the soaked beans, barley, and water or beef broth, and bring to a simmer.

  3. 3

Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, beef brisket or ribs, paprika, and black pepper to the pot.

  4. 4

  7. 7

Serve hot, and enjoy the rich, hearty flavors of Cholent.
