Indulge in the sweet and savory flavors of Char Siu, a beloved Cantonese dish featuring tender pork shoulder marinated in hoisin, soy sauce, and five spice. Perfect for a weekend feast or a special family gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1.5 kg pork shoulder
- 1 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp five spice powder
- 1 tbsp red food coloring
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
Method
- 1
In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, five spice powder, red food coloring, and sesame oil to create the marinade.
- 2
Place the pork shoulder strips in a large zip-lock bag or a dish and pour the marinade over the pork. Seal the bag or cover the dish, and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.
- 3
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). Line a baking tray with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
- 4
Remove the pork from the marinade and place it on the prepared baking tray. Reserve the marinade for basting.
- 5
Bake the pork in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, basting with the reserved marinade every 10 minutes, until the pork is cooked through and caramelized on the outside.
- 6
Once done, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing it into thin pieces.
- 7
Serve the sliced Char Siu with steamed rice and your choice of vegetables or in a bao bun.
