Indulge in the sweet, rich flavors of homemade challah, a traditional Jewish bread that’s perfect for Shabbat dinners or festive occasions. Its golden crust and soft, fluffy interior make it a delightful centerpiece for any meal.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Method
- 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Add eggs, vegetable oil, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
- 3
Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
- 4
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 6
Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal portions. Braid the portions together to form a loaf.
- 7
Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- 8
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the loaf with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
