Indulge in the warm, fluffy delight of Buchteln, sweet yeast dumplings filled with luscious fruit jam and dusted with powdered sugar. Perfect for a cozy brunch or a comforting dessert on a chilly evening.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 250 ml milk
- 50 g butter
- 75 g sugar
- 7 g dry yeast
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 300 g fruit jam
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Method
- 1
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in the warm milk. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- 3
Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 5
Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1 cm thick. Cut into squares (approximately 10 cm x 10 cm).
- 6
Place a spoonful of fruit jam in the center of each square, fold the corners over the jam to form a bun, and pinch to seal.
- 7
Arrange the buns in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- 8
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the Buchteln for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
