Indulge in the rich flavors of Dutch Bitterballen, a delightful beef croquette seasoned with nutmeg and spices, perfect for a cozy gathering or game day snack. Crispy on the outside and savory within, they're a true comfort food treat.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 300 g beef, minced
- 50 g butter
- 50 g flour
- 300 ml beef broth
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 cups breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs
Method
- 1
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and stir continuously for about 2 minutes to create a roux.
- 2
Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
- 3
Add the minced beef, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the thickened mixture. Stir well and cook for another 5 minutes until the meat is cooked through.
- 4
Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to cool and firm up.
- 5
Once cooled, shape the mixture into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- 6
Dip each ball into the beaten eggs, then roll in breadcrumbs until well coated.
- 7
Heat oil in a deep fryer or a deep skillet to 180°C (350°F). Fry the bitterballen in batches until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes.
- 8
Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with mustard for dipping.
