Indulge in the sweet, moist delight of Basbousa, a traditional Middle Eastern semolina cake soaked in syrup and topped with slivered almonds. Perfect for a cozy dessert after dinner or a festive gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup semolina
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 0.5 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- slivered almonds to taste for garnish
Method
- 1
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine semolina, sugar, yogurt, melted butter, and baking powder. Mix until well combined.
- 3
Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
- 4
Use a knife to score the surface of the batter into diamond or square shapes. Place a slivered almond in the center of each piece.
- 5
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- 6
While the basbousa is baking, prepare the syrup by combining water and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- 7
Once the basbousa is done baking, pour the hot syrup evenly over the cake while it is still warm. Let it absorb the syrup for at least 30 minutes before serving.
