Indulge in the creamy, caramel-kissed delight of Banh Flan, a Vietnamese custard dessert that melts in your mouth. Perfect for a sweet finish to any meal or a charming treat at gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons water

Method

    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

    In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and turns to a golden caramel. Immediately pour the caramel into the bottom of a round cake pan, tilting to coat evenly.

    In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.

    Pour the egg mixture over the caramel in the cake pan.

    Place the cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cake pan. This creates a water bath for even cooking.

    Bake for about 60 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

    Remove the pan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

    To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it, then invert onto a plate.
