Indulge in the delightful flavors of Banh Bao, a Vietnamese steamed bun filled with savory ground pork and fragrant green onions. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a fun gathering with friends!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup ground pork
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp green onion

Method

  1. 1

In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

Add the all-purpose flour and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Knead until a smooth dough forms, then cover and let rise for 1 hour.

  3. 3

In another bowl, mix ground pork, fish sauce, and chopped green onion. Set aside for the filling.

  4. 4

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Flatten each ball in your hand.

  5. 5

Place a spoonful of the pork mixture in the center of each dough circle, then carefully fold the edges over to seal it, shaping it into a ball.

  6. 6

Prepare a steamer and steam the buns for about 15-20 minutes until cooked through.

  7. 7

Serve warm and enjoy your Banh Bao!

I was a bit nervous trying my hand at Banh Bao for the first time, but it turned out surprisingly well. The dough was soft and fluffy, and I felt pretty proud of the result.

The soft, pillowy texture of the Banh Bao offers a warm embrace, while the subtle nutty notes from the flour blend beautifully with the faint sweetness of the yeast, creating a comforting aroma that beckons you to take a bite. Each steamed bun carries an inviting warmth that enhances the experience.
