Indulge in the sweet layers of flaky phyllo dough, rich walnuts, and fragrant cinnamon, all drenched in a honey syrup. This classic Middle Eastern dessert is perfect for special occasions or a delightful finish to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

Melt the butter in a saucepan or microwave.

  3. 3

In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon.

  4. 4

Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in a greased 9x13 inch pan, brushing each sheet with melted butter.

  5. 5

Spread a thin layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo. Repeat layering 5 more times (phyllo, butter, walnut mixture), finishing with 10 layers of phyllo on top.

  6. 6

Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes until golden brown.

  8. 8

While baklava is baking, combine sugar, water, and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Let cool.

  9. 9

Once baklava is done, pour the syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Let it cool and absorb the syrup before serving.
