Experience the joy of homemade bagels, with a chewy crust and soft, warm center, perfect for breakfast or brunch. Topped with sesame and poppy seeds, they’re a delightful treat any day of the week.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Method
- 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- 3
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 5
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add honey.
- 6
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and stretch to form a bagel.
- 7
Boil the bagels in the honey water for about 1 minute on each side. Remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 8
Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
