IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Method
- 1
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, eggs, and yeast mixture.
- 3
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 5
Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread cocoa powder and chocolate chips over the dough, then roll it tightly into a log.
- 6
Twist the log into a spiral shape and place it in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- 7
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top of the babka with the beaten egg and bake for 30-45 minutes until golden brown.
- 8
Let the babka cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
