Indulge in a warm slice of Apfelstrudel, a classic Austrian pastry filled with sweet, spiced apples and a hint of cinnamon. Perfect for cozy evenings or festive gatherings, this dessert is sure to impress your guests.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 medium apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 2 tablespoons butter
Method
- 1
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add water and vegetable oil, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- 2
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
- 3
While the dough is resting, prepare the filling by mixing the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and bread crumbs in a bowl.
- 4
Roll out the rested dough on a floured surface as thin as possible, ideally to the size of a kitchen table.
- 5
Spread the apple mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- 6
Carefully roll the dough from one edge to the other, encasing the apple filling. Seal the edges and place the strudel seam-side down on a baking sheet.
- 7
Brush the strudel with melted butter and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 30-45 minutes or until golden brown.
- 8
Let the Apfelstrudel cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with a dusting of powdered sugar or vanilla ice cream.
