Warm up with a comforting bowl of Traditional Australian Pea and Ham Soup, where tender split peas meld with smoky ham hock and fresh vegetables. Ideal for cozy weeknight dinners or a hearty lunch on a chilly day.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split green peas
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 sticks celery
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 litre vegetable or chicken broth
  • 250 grams ham hock
  • salt and pepper to taste seasoning

Method

  1. 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the diced onion, garlic, celery, and carrots, and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Stir in the split green peas and diced carrots, allowing them to combine with the vegetables.

  4. 4

Pour in the broth and add the ham hock. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  5. 5

Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 1.5 hours or until the peas are tender.

  6. 6

Remove the ham hock, shred the meat, and return it to the soup, discarding the bone.

  7. 7

Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving.

  8. 8

Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
