Indulge in the rich layers of Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, a classic German Black Forest cake that combines velvety chocolate sponge, tart cherries, and whipped cream. Perfect for celebrations or a cozy afternoon treat.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 250 g granulated sugar
- 100 g unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 500 g cherries, pitted
- 75 ml Kirsch (cherry schnapps)
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 50 g dark chocolate shavings
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
In a large bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, and sugar. Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract, and beat until smooth.
- 3
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
- 4
Once the cakes are cool, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers. Soak each layer with Kirsch.
- 5
Whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Layer the cakes, spreading whipped cream and pitted cherries between each layer.
- 6
Top the final layer with more whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings. Decorate with additional cherries if desired.
- 7
Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
