Warm your soul with this classic French Onion Soup, where sweet caramelized onions meet rich beef broth and a bubbly layer of melted Gruyère. Ideal for cozy weeknight dinners or elegant gatherings with friends.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 4 medium yellow onions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 4 slices French baguette
- 1 cup gruyère cheese
Method
- 1
In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- 2
Add the sliced onions and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 30 minutes.
- 3
Stir in the sugar and cook for an additional 5 minutes to enhance the caramelization.
- 4
Pour in the white wine and cook for about 5 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pot to deglaze.
- 5
Add the beef broth and bring the soup to a simmer. Cook for another 15 minutes.
- 6
Preheat the broiler in your oven. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted baguette and a generous amount of gruyère cheese.
- 7
Place the bowls under the broiler for 3-5 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- 8
Serve hot and enjoy your homemade French onion soup!
