Indulge in a comforting British fish pie, featuring tender white fish and smoky haddock enveloped in a creamy sauce, topped with fluffy mashed potatoes. Ideal for a cozy weeknight dinner or a family gathering.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams white fish fillets (like cod or haddock)
  • 200 grams smoked haddock
  • 300 ml milk
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 50 grams butter
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon fresh parsley
  • 800 grams mashed potatoes

Method

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).

  2. 2

In a large saucepan, combine the white fish fillets and smoked haddock. Pour in the milk and gently poach the fish for about 8-10 minutes until cooked through. Remove the fish and set aside, reserving the milk.

  3. 3

In the same saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux. Gradually add the reserved milk, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens.

  4. 4

Flake the poached fish into bite-sized pieces and add it to the sauce along with the frozen peas. Mix gently to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. 5

Transfer the fish mixture into a baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top, smoothing with a spatula.

  6. 6

Sprinkle chopped parsley over the mashed potatoes and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  7. 7

Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

  8. 8

Serve hot and enjoy your comforting fish pie!
