Savor the comforting warmth of Cottage Pie, a classic British dish with hearty ground beef, savory vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner that brings the family together.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 carrots carrots
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 50 grams butter
  • 100 ml milk
  • to taste salt and pepper

Method

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

  2. 2

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.

  3. 3

Add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are tender.

  4. 4

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute. Pour in the beef broth and simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

  5. 5

While the meat mixture simmers, boil the cubed potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and return to pot.

  6. 6

Mash the potatoes with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. 7

Spread the beef mixture in a baking dish and top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing out the top.

  8. 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

I loved how the caramelized onions added a rich depth of flavor to the cottage pie, perfectly complementing the savory ground beef. The combination of textures from the tender carrots really made each bite satisfying.
