Indulge in the aromatic layers of this classic Indian biryani, featuring tender chicken marinated with spices and fluffy basmati rice. Perfect for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering with friends.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 500 grams chicken pieces
- 1 cup onion
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 tablespoon ginger
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
Method
- 1
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- 2
Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pot. Cook for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
- 3
Add the chicken pieces to the pot, along with salt and ground cumin. Cook the chicken until browned on all sides.
- 4
Pour in enough water to cover the chicken. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.
- 5
Remove the chicken and set aside. Strain the broth and return it to the pot. Add the soaked basmati rice to the pot along with enough broth to cook the rice (about 4 cups).
- 6
Place the chicken pieces back on top of the rice, cover the pot, and cook on low heat for about 30-40 minutes, until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the broth.
- 7
Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot, garnished with fried onions or fresh herbs if desired.
